In 2023, in a follow-up project funded by the Eureka, Scenwise, Bureau Onderweg, ViNotion and Transnomis join force to develop an advance accident detection algorithm SRAIR (SmartRoads Automatic Incident Recognition). SRAIR combines a large variety of data sources including loops data, Floating Car Data (FCD), Waze alerts, NDW alerts, and video analytics data to achieve real-time accident detection on arterial/provincial roads.

Province of Noord-Brabant is highly interested in the potential of SmartRoads. An operational trial on the N279 was completed from September to December 2023. In 2024, a second pilot including multiple regions were successfully completed. We presented the results during the ITS Europe congress in Sevilla and different countries showed interest in our solutions.

Predict and influence

If it is getting busy, a trigger goes off in the dashboard. We determine the limit value together with the customer after discussions with various stakeholders. If it threatens to become too busy, we inform and advise visitors and travelers via social media and messaging facilities.

We influence travelers by sending messages to travelers before, during and after the trip about where and when it can be busy. We provide advice for quieter times to travel, which locations are easily accessible or to come by public transport or bicycle if we expect traffic jams.

Use of CROMAS

This chain solution can be used to tackle crowd management together with several government agencies. This is possible in highly urban areas such as around the Johan Cruijff Arena if there are multiple events at the same time. In (recreational) nature parks or at medium to large events.  The CROMAS consortium won the competition Scaled-up Visitor Flow tendered by the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam. We conducted successful pilot for the Amsterdam Kalverstraat shopping area  and the Zandvoort beach. The consortium also won the Smart Mobility Flevoland project and carried out successful tests at Walibi Fright Nights and Bataviastad Shopping area.

Several stakeholders can log in to our dynamic dashboard at the same time. Police, security, municipality, province and in this case the Walibi amusement park can see for themselves where it is or will become busy and what opportunities there are for spread. This makes it a lot easier for them to coordinate who will take which measures and what they can do together. The various scenarios are of course already on the shelf. A decision can therefore be made in a split second, where everyone can work from one comm operational picture.

“We use open data, supplemented with data from our partners and customers. Stakeholders such as the police and governments obviously already know some of the data. But seeing this data combined in one overview is new. The reactions to this are not in terms of “nice or great” but simply necessary to do the job well. In that respect, CROMAS is already proving its added value in the operation.”

Enhanced Urban Road Safety (EURoS) – co-funded by the Province of North Brabant

According to European research, bikers account for 1% of the road traffic, but 25% of all the fatalities. Pedestrians account for another 21% of all fatalities.

Different vendors develop the Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (ARAS) to protect individual riders. However, the collective benefits to the other road users are still limited.

Therefore, Scenwise, Coderized and Bureau Onderweg, join forces to develop an Enhanced Urban Road Safety platform (EURoS). This project is co-funded by the Province of North Brabant, The Netherlands.

When using the Enhanced Urban Road Safety (EURoS) platform, cities and municipalities gain the following advantages:

• Early detection of geocoded danger hotspots
• Understand the characteristics of conflicting situations and the causes
• Danger hotspots can be prioritized according to the risk level
• Take short & long term measures to improve the road safety

Scale up the life-saving impact to all road users

EURoS collects and processes the data received by the smartphone sensors and camera. We apply AI Vision and intelligent algorithms to detect dangerous hotspots. EURoS can also be used to determine the quality of the cycling network. With the EURoS alerts and resulting dashboard of information, cities can take short-term, medium-term and long-term measures to improve urban road safety. The collective measures taken by the cities will improve the safety of all road user groups.

Each consortium member contributes a different aspect of the combined project solution for individual and aggregate safety. The ultimate goal of this project to scale up the life-saving impact to all road users.

The consortium successfully implemented and tested the EURoS platform. We are engaging municipalities and schools to participate in a pilot for improving the safety of cycling routes for schools. We also plan to extend the application for collecting safety data to support wayfinding for blind and visually impaired people.

Scenwise is a long-term partner of the CHARM project. We supported Kapsch TrafficCom in the implementation of Dynac at Rijkswaterstaat. We introduced the IWAP (IncidentWegvakAdviesPunt) -concept which is widely adopted by Rijkswaterstaat (RWS). With IWAPs, Dynac can dynamically generate response plans which dramatically reduce the effort to configure a large amount of scenarios as static plans. We completed different concept designs and the Signalling Rule framework for the mission critical MTM2 (Motorway Traffic Management) system. The concept design and the Signalling Rule framework are accepted by RWS.

Currently, we are actively supporting CHARM IWB team of RWS to implement Dynac ATMS at the traffic management centers.

The field of indoor positioning and indoor navigation has been undergoing sustainable changes and experiencing exciting new developments during the recent years.

Scenwise recognises the potentials of indoor navigation to extend the services which our SmartCity platform can offer. That’s why we started a project to explore the possibility of indoor navigation. We successful finished a proof-of-concept. We also include augmented reality in our proof-of-concept. We intend to continue with this development in the following period.

We’ll collaborate with a partner in this development. More information will be provided later.

Connected Transport Corridors for more efficient, safer and more sustainable transport in the Netherlands

Scenwise played an important role within the Connected Transport Corridors (CTC) programme of the Province of South Holland. We worked closely with the project team and the experts of the province different to implement 33 intelligent Traffic Light Systems (iVRI) on 7 transport corridors. Through the CTC programme, Province South Holland becomes the front-runner in the rollout of the next generation traffic light systems. Both the province and the logistics sector benefit from the different use-cases which are implemented within CTC.

To support this project, we developed an effective test method using a test-vehicle equipped with dashcam and different Talking Traffic apps.

In addition, Scenwise was responsible for the project management of different research projects to evaluate the effect of truck priorities on

1. fuel consumption and emissions
2. traffic flow
3. travel time, number of stops

The new traffic jam detection algorithm is based on FCD. The new approach has the following advantages:

• It has a nationwide coverage, even in areas where there is no lane signaling management (i.e. without loop detectors);
• The length of the traffic jams and the heads and tails of the traffic jams can be determined with higher accuracy thanks to the high resolution of FCD (every 50 m).
• The  information chain is much shorter. This means more up-to-date data (1 min): The new solution replaces the processing steps of the current MTM-Monica-Monibas-Trefi information chain;
• The solution is scalable to the arterial roads and urban road network. We also demonstrated this during the pilot.

The project was carried out with fixed-time and fixed-price agreement. Both Rijkswaterstaat and NDW are very satisfied with our scrum/agile development method and the final results. The algorithm was put into production shortly after the project was completed. The new algorithm has been in service since 2021.
